Komatsu introduces ‘smart construction’ to Singapore with landmark deployment at Changi Airport T5 project

Komatsu has undertaken the first full-scale deployment of its ‘smart construction’ digital solution in Singapore for the Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5) project, one of the country’s major infrastructure developments.

Construction began in May 2025, with completion targeted for the mid-2030s. As a next-generation mega hub airport, the project is regarded as core infrastructure supporting Singapore’s economic growth and global competitiveness.

In this project, Komatsu will deploy a suite of advanced solutions, including 3D Machine Guidance, 3D Machine Guidance Flex and SC Dashboard. These technologies enable real-time tracking of earthwork progress, seamless equipment integration and data-driven project management, helping to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making across the construction site.

The 3D Machine Guidance enhances construction work using machine position data and design data obtained through sensors and GNSS antennas mounted on construction equipment, contributing to increased efficiency and accuracy. The 3D Machine Guidance Flex enables the functions of 3D Machine Guidance to be applied not only to hydraulic excavators but also to other types of equipment such as bulldozers, supporting flexible digital construction based on site needs. Meanwhile, the SC Dashboard improves construction management and speeds up decision-making by visualising and sharing construction progress and site data among stakeholders.

Changi Airport T5 is a landmark infrastructure project located within the 1,080-ha Changi East development. Upon completion, this new mega terminal will be able to accommodate an initial capacity of 50 million passengers annually.

As digital technologies continue to transform the construction industry, Komatsu has been actively promoting ICT-driven construction technologies and digital solutions to the Singapore government and leading contractors, helping to advance the digital transformation of construction sites across the country.

To date, Komatsu has delivered a large number of construction equipment units for the T5 project, together with the implementation of smart construction solutions during specific phases in collaboration with Earthbrain Ltd, Komatsu’s subsidiary and a developer and provider of smart construction solutions.

“Every construction site is different, and every customer has their own unique challenges. We’re really pleased to be supporting our customer here at Changi Airport as they take on this exciting project. Through smart construction, Komatsu does more than just provide machines – we work closely with our customers, from machine operation through to the use of digital site data, supporting them in improving productivity and making better decisions every step of the way,” said Chikashi Shike, senior executive officer and president of solution division at Komatsu Ltd.

Globally, Komatsu has delivered over 9,000 units of its 3D Machine Guidance systems and more than 22,000 intelligent Machine Control (iMC) machines. “We’re really excited to bring our expertise to this project. By combining equipment, digital technologies and data, we’re supporting our customers to work more safely and productively on site. We believe this initiative will accelerate the digital transformation of construction sites in Singapore, contributing to broader digitalisation efforts across Asia,” said Yasuji Nishiura, senior executive officer and president of construction equipment and regional marketing division at Komatsu Ltd.
