CBA Expo and Concrete Expo Asia will return to the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) from 23 to 25 September 2026. This year also marks the debut of Mining Expo Thailand, a new exhibition designed to serve the country’s mining and mineral-processing sectors.

\n\n

Organised by BMEX Co Ltd, the events will bring the three industries together on one platform, reflecting the close relationship between their supply chains. Raw materials extracted by the mining sector support concrete production, while concrete remains one of the fundamental materials used in construction.

\n\n

More than 100 exhibiting companies and brands from Thailand and overseas are expected to participate, presenting the latest machinery, tools, equipment, spare parts, products and technologies for the construction, concrete and mining industries.

\n\n

By co-locating the three events, businesses and professionals throughout the entire value chain will be able to connect, exchange knowledge, explore partnerships and discover new business opportunities at a single venue.

\n\n

In addition, the events will feature a comprehensive programme of seminars, expert discussions and technology presentations under the theme ‘Towards the Future and Sustainability of the Construction, Concrete, and Mining Industries.’

\n\n

The programme will focus on practical knowledge and solutions to help businesses prepare for greenhouse gas reduction regulations, carbon credit mechanisms, energy-efficiency requirements, and the transition to lower-carbon operations. These regulatory and market developments are rapidly becoming important considerations for heavy industries, both in Thailand and across the wider region.

CIMIC Group company Leighton Asia has been awarded a contract to build a luxury residential project in Mumbai for Embassy Developments Limited, a major real estate developer in India.

\n\n

Located in the South Mumbai area, the project – known as Embassy Citadel – involves construction of a single tower, approximately 300 m in height, with a built-up area of around 192,000 sq m.

\n\n

“Embassy Citadel has been conceived as a new benchmark for luxury living in Mumbai, with an equally strong emphasis on engineering, precision, safety and construction quality,” said Parag Saraiya, chief operating officer – north and west at Embassy Developments Ltd. “Leighton Asia brings deep global expertise in delivering complex high-rise developments and a proven reputation for operational excellence. Their capabilities and experience make them a natural partner for a project of this scale, ambition and technical sophistication.”

Leighton Asia will undertake civil and structural works, with construction set to commence in July 2026.

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) is steadily extending its global reach, with a particular emphasis on the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. Driven by a commitment to advancing concrete knowledge worldwide and engaging globally, key components of its Strategic Plan, ACI remains active in key international markets and continues to foster engagement outside North America.

\n\n

One individual playing a central role in these expansion efforts is Zhu Liu, PE, director of the APAC region at ACI. He works to deepen engagement, strengthen collaboration on technical and educational initiatives, and promote the adoption of ACI codes, standards and certification programmes throughout APAC.

\n\n

Mr Liu views his position as an opportunity to leverage both his engineering experience and personal heritage to amplify ACI’s impact. With over 20 years as a structural engineer, he understands the needs of members and stakeholders across diverse regions. His international background – growing up in China and living in Canada, the US, the UAE and Saudi Arabia – gives him a unique and global perspective as well as deep ties to Asia.

\n\n

“I believe my position helps people on a global scale, especially in APAC, where I feel personally connected,” said Mr Liu. “I have two high-level goals I am working on, which is to exchange knowledge with developed countries and bring knowledge into developing countries.”

\n\n

Challenges in APAC

\n\n

In working across the APAC region, Mr Liu has encountered significant diversity in language, culture and economic standing. Asia is home to both the richest and poorest countries and contains more languages and cultures than any other region. This diversity, combined with robust economic growth over the past decade, makes the region both promising and complex as ACI strengthens its presence.

\n\n

According to ACI, one specific challenge involves the reference standards used across the region. Most Asian countries rely on non-ASTM testing methods, which can complicate the adoption of ACI codes and certification programmes that often reference ASTM standards. To address this, ACI has begun partnering with ASTM to encourage the adoption of ASTM testing standards across APAC.

\n\n

“Looking at an analysis of concrete usage in Asia, it is higher than any other region as far as annual compound growth rate or absolute volumes are concerned,” said Mr Liu. “ACI standards and certification programmes could be used by almost all developing countries in Asia if we can gain acceptance for ASTM testing methods in the region.”

\n\n

APAC local chapters

\n\n

Another important consideration is raising awareness of the benefits of being allied with ACI. Sometimes, these advantages are not well understood locally, highlighting the need for Mr Liu’s continued outreach. He actively connects with local chapters and members, gathering feedback and setting up one-on-one meetings with governmental bodies through these networks.

\n\n

Mr Liu emphasised the importance of open dialogue with local governments. By listening first to stakeholders, he can tailor ACI’s offerings – whether documents or programmes – to fit local priorities and needs. He described this as an interactive process that requires multiple conversations to identify the most effective solutions.

\n\n

In some developed countries, established codes are already in place, and there may be reluctance to make changes, shared ACI. Here, the institute can evaluate its offerings beyond ACI Code-318-25: Building Code for Structural Concrete – Code Requirements and Commentary to find appropriate options. For developing countries, the opportunity is even greater, as their codes may not yet be fully matured. In these cases, local agencies might be open to adopting models based on ACI Code-318-25, customised for local practices and translated into local languages.

\n\n

The role of education and training

\n\n

Education and training stand out as major priorities for government agencies across the region, given the focus on maintaining construction quality. This creates an opportunity for ACI’s educational and certification programmes. Conducting research into local practices, training approaches and certification needs is key to ensuring these programmes are effective.

\n\n

“Education and training may be the most important things ACI can do in East Asia,” said Mr Liu. “Developing countries need whatever they can find to improve the quality of design and construction. Developed countries instead might be more interested in continuing education.”

\n\n

ACI’s commitment to sustainable construction practices is also a critical aspect of its global strategy. The institute has long been a leader in sustainability, and Mr Liu’s approach starts with engaging chapters that act as ACI’s local champions. These chapters can help guide conversations on sustainability and define ACI’s position within them. In regions without an established chapter, Mr Liu’s plan is to begin with student chapters to build a foundation for growth.

\n\n

“With their help, we can find our position in the conversation,” he said. “For those regions without chapters, we need to establish one, starting with a student chapter.”

\n\n

Future vision

\n\n

Looking ahead, Mr Liu noted that Asia’s rapid growth and large population set the region apart. This dynamic environment creates new opportunities for both ACI and the countries involved. His focus is on supporting developing countries that require the most assistance from ACI, while also working with mature markets like Singapore, which could play a central role in ACI’s future activities in the region.

\n\n

Mr Liu underscored that ACI’s leadership, technical resources and recognition exceed those of any other organisation in the industry. Beyond providing direct support, ACI can act as a connector, linking local people with governments and less-connected institutes. Its influence extends beyond country borders, helping to facilitate knowledge exchange across disciplines, industries and nations.

The upcoming Digital Construction Asia and Geo Connect Asia will take place from 31 March to 1 April 2026 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Singapore. The events will welcome participants from local and regional government agencies, enterprise decision-makers and global experts.

Following a year of strong performance and signs of stabilisation in 2025, construction markets across Asia Pacific (APAC) are entering 2026 in a more balanced position and are set for sustained growth and stability, according to a new report by Linesight.

\n\n

Despite persistent labour and cost challenges, the company’s latest Construction Market Insights has revealed that the majority of APAC construction markets are expected to experience an annual growth rate of 3-6% between 2026 and 2029. This continued growth is fuelled by robust investments and activity in renewable energy, transportation and digital infrastructure, particularly in data centres and semiconductor sectors.

\n\n

The construction industries in Singapore, Malaysia and India were standout performers in 2025 and are projected to have expanded by 5.2%, 8.3% and 7.1% respectively. Other APAC markets such as Japan have continued to maintain steady momentum and are projected to have grown by 1.6% in 2025.

\n\n

Some highlights

\n\n

Singapore’s construction industry is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.2% between 2026 and 2029, supported by transport infrastructure investment such as the Land Transport Master Plan 2040. Construction activity could also be boosted by additional capacity awarded to data centre operators, who are anticipating approval for an additional 300 MW of capacity.

\n\n

Malaysia’s construction industry is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 4% between 2026 and 2029, supported by continued public and private investment in housing, oil and gas supply chains. Similarly, data centre investments to enhance digital infrastructure continue to be a stronghold in supporting further industry growth.

\n\n

Japan’s construction industry is expected to largely sustain its growth at an average of 1.3% from 2026 and 2029. This is led by investments in transport infrastructure, offshore wind projects, AI-focused data centres and semiconductor plants.

\n\n

‘Collaboration ensures speed, certainty’

\n\n

With continued global macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, navigating potential project schedules and managing budgets are top considerations for contractors and developers in 2026. Risks are expected to remain elevated as a result of persistent skilled labour shortages, rising costs, and supply chain disruptions linked to new US tariffs.

\n\n

Nevertheless, the region’s construction industry outlook for 2026 looks optimistic. Tariff-related developments continue to influence construction markets, but their impact has been more limited than initially anticipated. In particular, commodity prices, with the exception of metals, have broadly moderated in 2025.

\n\n

India may see steel price declines of around 3% for steel prices as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) impacts steel exports. Diesel rates are likely to remain under 2% due to global oversupply and record US output. Moderate construction inflation is also expected this year.

\n\n

Scott Halyday, regional director for Southeast Asia at Linesight, said, “APAC construction markets have emerged strongly, with resilient performance in 2025. Sustained growth and stability are projected to be defining themes for the region’s construction industry in 2026, with Southeast Asian markets leading the pack. Global trade tensions and tariff pressures alongside labour and cost challenges, however, will still remain front of mind for contractors and developers.”

“In 2026, speed and certainty will be driven by collaboration,” added Mr Halyday. “Early engagement with designers, contractors and the supply chain will enable faster decisions, clearer cost and schedule visibility, and more effective planning of constrained labour resources. Projects that align stakeholders early are better positioned to secure talent, mitigate resourcing risk, and deliver at pace with confidence”

CIMIC Group company Leighton Asia has been awarded the civil and mechanical works by PT. JGC Indonesia to support the onshore scope for bp Indonesia’s Tangguh Ubadari, CCUS, Onshore Compression (UCC) Project, located in Papua Barat province, Indonesia.

\n\n

The task includes general civil works for site development and tie-in mechanical works at the major Indonesian energy project.

\n\n

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has appointed Joakim Arndorw as head of sales, Region Asia. He will also become a member of the Volvo CE executive management team.

\n\n

Since 11 September 2023, Mr Arndorw has served as head of Region International at Volvo CE, leading the region through substantial change and transformation with notable success. He brings expertise from both the retail and aftermarket sectors, with a strong focus on customer experience.

\n\n

The current head of sales, Region Asia, Tomas Kuta, will return to Sweden in February 2026 after seven highly successful years leading Volvo CE’s sales business in the region.

\n\n

Melker Jernberg, head of Volvo CE, said, “Please join me in welcoming Joakim to his new role and in expressing our sincere gratitude to Tomas for his outstanding contributions over the past seven years – a period of significant change for Volvo CE in Asia.

Mr Arndorw will take up his new role on 1 February 2026 and will be based in Shanghai, China.

CBA Expo 2025, the third edition of Thailand’s international construction and mining technology expo, and Concrete Expo Asia 2025, the second edition of Thailand’s international concrete expo and conference, were held on 24-26 September at BITEC Bangna in Bangkok.

\n\n

According to the events’ organiser, BMEX Ltd, the overall number of visitors exceeded 2,325, with 88% of them coming from Thailand and the rest from abroad including Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, and others. Over 100 brands of machinery, tools, equipment, spare parts and technologies were showcased at both events. There were also equipment demonstrations and seminars on a variety of topics.

The events generated more than THB 110 million in negotiated sales, shared BMEX, demonstrating the construction industry’s sustained expansion from late this year into next year, despite the overall economic downturn. “This is because the industry has adapted and transformed, utilising efficient machinery and technology to cut prices, time, labour and other expenses while maintaining high-quality work,” said the organiser. “And this is one of the reasons why the construction, mining and concrete machinery and technology businesses continue to do well.”

BMEX is also optimistic about the future expansion of the construction, mining and concrete industries, as well as the ongoing development of breakthrough machinery technologies. As a result, CBA Expo and Concrete Expo Asia are set to return in 2026, taking place on 23-25 September at BITEC Bangna. The events will continue to support growth in Thailand and the region’s construction, mining and concrete industries by showcasing leading machinery brands.
