Malaysian contractor Gamuda wins Penang LRT Mutiara Line project

SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd (SRSC), Gamuda’s 60%-owned subsidiary, has been awarded a design and build contract for the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project by MRT Mutiara Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp).

The RM8.31 billion contract involves the design and construction of an approximately 23.7-km railway viaduct from Komtar to Penang South Reclamation (PSR) Island A, 19 elevated stations and a provisional station in Island A, a depot, and other associated facilities, shared Gamuda in its statement.

The Penang LRT Mutiara Line project marks a significant first step in transforming the state’s public transportation system. This initiative aims to reduce private car usage by encouraging a shift to public transport, helping to address the island’s traffic issues.

According to Gamuda, the project is scheduled for completion within six years from the notice to proceed. Once operational, it is expected to decrease vehicle emissions, improve air quality and contribute to a healthier urban environment.
