Vietnam breaks ground on two major airport projects

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for three main contract packages to build the Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1 and Tan Son Nhat International Airport Terminal 3.

Totalling over 53 trillion VND, these three contract packages include Package No. 5.10 and Package No. 4.6 for the construction of Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1 in Dong Nai province, and Package No. 12 for the construction of Tan Son Nhat International Airport Terminal 3 in Ho Chi Minh City.

When fully completed, ACV said the entire Long Thanh International Airport will have a capacity of up to 100 million passengers and 5 mil t of cargo annually, while the Tan Son Nhat International Airport will be able to handle up to 50 million passengers annually.

Long Thanh Int’l Airport Phase 1

According to ACV, the Long Thanh International Airport Phase 1 is aimed to accommodate up to 25 million passengers and 1.2 mil t of cargo per annum. There will be one runway and one passenger terminal in this project.

Package No. 5.10 is to build the passenger terminal, totalling over 35,000 billion VND. It is planned to be completed in 39 months.

The design of Long Thanh International Airport’s terminal is inspired by a lotus blossom, revealed ACV. The highlight of the building is the central lighting at the check-in area and the central skylight from the 3rd to the 1st floor where the waterfall and landscape are located.

The airport runway (under Package No. 4.6) features 4,000 m long and 7 5 m wide (including a road width of 45 m + 2 x 15 m for shoulders). This contract has a total cost of over 7,308 billion VND, with a construction period of 23 months. ACV added that advanced technologies and cutting-edge equipment are also being employed in this project to develop a contemporary and smart airport that can compete with other airports throughout the world.

Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport expansion

The construction of Tan Son Nhat International Airport Terminal T3 (Package No. 12) has a total investment of 10,990 billion VND. It will incorporate a basement and four above-ground floors, offering a total construction area of 112,500 sq m.

Inspired by Vietnam’s traditional dress Ao Dai, the architectural design of the terminal is “elegant and youthful, reflecting the vibrant energy of Ho Chi Minh City,” said ACV.

There will be 90 check-in counters, 20 self-service bag-drop counters, and 42 self-check-in kiosks at the terminal. It will also provide 27 aircraft boarding gates (including 13 jet bridges and 14 bus gates).

ACV further highlighted that upon completion, Terminal 3 will serve the domestic market with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, accommodating up to 7,000 passengers per peak hour, and operating all varieties of Code C and Code E aircraft.

Package No. 12 is expected to be completed within 20 months, and put into trial operation at the beginning of the second quarter of 2025.
