The new Liebherr Transform is an upgrade, modification and overhaul service for Liebherr’s crawler cranes (up to 400 t), deep foundation equipment and duty-cycle crawler cranes.

\n\n

The company offers a number of retrofits and upgrades, which increase versatility and performance, or ensure compliance with more stringent regulations, thus opening up a wider spectrum of opportunities.

\n\n

“It is inevitable that equipment becomes outdated over time but that does not mean it has to be replaced. Existing machines can be transformed using affordable complete or partial machine overhauls, retrofits and upgrades,” explained Liebherr.

\n\n

“This not only saves the increased capital expenditure of investing in new machines, but also reduces the carbon footprint by avoiding the need for new equipment through the extension of the service life. At the same time, operators do not have to get used to new machines and can continue to benefit from their vast experience with existing equipment.”

\n\n

This new initiative by Liebherr helps to lighten the load through a comprehensive range of structural, electrical, mechanical, ergonomic or digital modifications. The company manages the entire planning and implementation of Transform projects – from consultation, through to installation and technical support and service.

GRL Engineers has appointed Scott Webster as president, effective 8 July 2022. A 30-year GRL veteran executive and principal engineer, he will succeed Patrick Hannigan.

\n\n

Mr Webster, previously the GRL vice president managing the company’s global offshore and North Carolina-based regional operations, will oversee GRL’s 14 offices, leading the GRL’s management team, engineers and staff in providing a wide array of deep foundation testing services both in the US and globally.

\n\n

Mr Webster has a vast experience in providing testing and engineering analyses of deep foundations for structures worldwide. He has also written and presented dozens of technical papers on deep foundations at various industry events throughout his tenure.

\n\n

In 2019, Mr Webster was elected treasurer of the Pile Drivers Contractor’s Association (PDCA), the same year he received the Professional Engineer’s Service Award. He is also a member of the ADSC, ASCE, DFI and National Society of Engineers and will continue to provide GRL leadership within the industry.

\n\n

“It is an honour to be selected as the next president of GRL Engineers,” said Mr Webster. “I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to work closely with both former GRL presidents, Frank Rausche and Pat Hannigan throughout my career, and look forward to the future of the organisation.”

\n\n

Mr Hannigan is stepping down after having been GRL president for the past 11 years. During his tenure, he was able to guide GRL into new areas of deep foundations testing and analysis while maintaining GRL’s position as the world leader of dynamic testing and analysis of driven piles. His expertise and leadership have resulted in significant growth of GRL’s technical capabilities, areas of practice, industry influence and branch locations.

\n\n

Mr Hannigan was instrumental in GRL’s bi-directional static load testing (BDSLT) and top-load bi-directional testing (TLBT) initiatives and development. During his 45-year-long career, he has authored numerous technical papers covering all aspects of deep foundations testing and analyses.

\n\n

Mr Hannigan is the lead author of the 1997, 2006 and 2016 editions of the FHWA manual for ‘Design and Construction of Driven Pile Foundations.’ He will continue with GRL as a senior consultant providing his expertise on BDSLT/TLBT projects, workshop/training seminars and numerous other activities.

\n\n

Headquartered in the US, GRL Engineers is a professional engineering company established to provide specialised testing, analysis and consulting services to the deep foundation industry. The new electric models from Liebherr will be displayed at bauma, including the LRH 100.1 unplugged and LRH 200 unplugged piling rigs, LB 25 unplugged and LB 30 unplugged drilling rigs, and LR 1130.1 unplugged and LR 1160.1 unplugged crawler cranes.

\n\n

A highlight of these battery-powered unplugged units is zero emission. They do not produce any exhaust fumes and are extremely quiet, making them suitable for noise-sensitive areas.

\n\n

The battery is charged using a conventional jobsite electric supply, and operation can continue as normal while charging. In order to change to battery operation, users just need to pull out the plug (hence, unplugged).

\n\n

According to Liebherr, whether attached to the electric supply or not, the performance and range of application remains unchanged. All six models are available in both conventional and battery-operated versions and feature identical performance specifications.

\n\n

LRH 100.1 unplugged and LRH 200 unplugged

\n\n

The LRH 200 unplugged has been newly developed and closes the gap between the LRH 100 and LRH 600 in the series of piling rigs.

\n\n

A 200-kWh battery pack ensures that the unplugged models can operate in battery mode for 4 to 5 hours in average pile driving applications. Optionally, it can be upgraded to 400 kWh for 8 to 10 hours of operation.

\n\n

The new design of the LRH 200 extends the range of applications and makes it even more versatile. In addition to piling, the machine can be used for continuous flight auger, full displacement and down-the-hole drilling, as well as for soil mixing work. A torque of 250 kNm provides the necessary power.

\n\n

When equipped with the Liebherr H 6 hydraulic hammer, the LRH 200 and the LRH 200 unplugged can lift piles up to 24.5 m long and weighing 16 t. The machine especially excels with its large working range. A radius of up to 8.7 m has the advantage that the machine does not have to be constantly moved.

\n\n

The design of the leader enables inclinations of up to 18° in all directions. Furthermore, it is also possible to raise or lower the leader by 6.5 m (for example, when working in a foundation pit), which makes the machine even more flexible.

\n\n

The Ground Pressure Visualization of the new LRH model calculates the current ground pressure in real time and compares it with the specified safety limits of the respective construction site. The ground pressure is displayed in the operator’s cabin. This means the operator is permanently aware of whether the machine is situated in, or is approaching, a critical area.

\n\n

The operation of the new LRH 200 piling rig is based on the proven concept of the LRH 100 and is therefore user-friendly. The integrated data recording makes the analysis of the pile data very easy and saves a significant amount of time.

\n\n

LB 25 unplugged and LB 30 unplugged

\n\n

The new LB 25 unplugged and LB 30 unplugged are identical to their conventional version in terms of application possibilities, weight or transport; however they have the additional advantage of zero emission. These drilling rigs can be used for all common applications in the field of deep foundation.

\n\n

Thanks to the optional extension of the drilling axis, the machines can be deployed for drilling diameters of up to 3.4 m. The optional rear support and the new design of the modular rear counterweight ensure higher stability and longer service life.

\n\n

Besides their standard design, both models are available in a low head version with a total height of 14.1 m, or as ultra-low head with only 7.7 m.

\n\n

For battery operation, the charging cable only needs to be unplugged and, for unlimited operation, reconnected to the construction site power supply. The battery is designed for a working time of 4 hours in Kelly operation. Whether in battery or plugged-in operation, the drilling performance remains unchanged.

\n\n

LR 1130.1 unplugged and LR 1160.1 unplugged

\n\n

The new LR 1130.1 unplugged and LR 1160.1 unplugged extend the range of crawler cranes from Liebherr’s Nenzing, Austria facility.

\n\n

The electro-hydraulic drive of these new cranes has the same performance specifications as the conventional version. Both versions are operated in the same way, which is highly practical if the crane driver often has to change between machines in one fleet.

\n\n

The capacity of the battery is designed for an average lifting operation of 8 hours. Alternatively, the main boom with luffing jib can be completely erected. The battery can be recharged within only 2.5 to 4.5 hours. As an option, the performance can be increased by 20 to 60% using additional batteries.

\n\n

In idling mode, the sound pressure level of three unplugged cranes is equivalent to that of a normal conversation on the jobsite. This corresponds to a value of only 60 dB(A). If it is taken into account that a crawler crane is in idling mode for 60% of the time on the jobsite, this low noise level is an advantage with great resonance.

\n\n

The latest system is the Gradient Travel Aid for safe negotiation of slopes and inclines. The crane’s control system automatically calculates the centre of gravity and warns the operator before the crane leaves the safe area. While travelling, the operator receives information about the permissible and actual gradient, and the crane’s overall centre of gravity at all times.

Liebherr has enhanced its remote service app to provide better support for its customers. The company’s new XpertAssist combines real-time expert advice from experienced technicians with a wide range of technical tools through an audio-visual connection. Immediate qualified fault analysis and online troubleshooting backed by step-by-step instructions mean assistance can be maximised and on-site attendances can be reduced to a minimum.

\n\n

Any necessary site attendances are made as efficient as possible through audio-video calls to predefine requirements and so increase the first time fix rate. A debriefing via audio-video conference call to explain the work done, or to address possible findings is part and parcel of this new service. Liebherr said the mean time to repair can be reduced by up to 50%, and field service costs cut by up to 20% per annum.

\n\n

XpertAssist extends to predictive maintenance advice and reports on individual machines or entire fleets, such as reports on safety or machine and engine utilisation. The interactive performance review and advice on preventive maintenance ensure high machine availability and early budget planning.

\n\n

Service technicians could spend up to 45% of their time just travelling to/from site, which would be time consuming and costly for all parties, explained Liebherr. Thanks to XpertAssist, availability of experts is increased through elimination of travel, thus giving them more time to attend to customer needs.

\n\n

Liebherr shared that recent experience in the Middle East underlines the importance of quick and efficient technology when projects are thousands of kilometres away from base. “For our company, which has all operations and projects outside our home country of Turkey, such remote service is perfect,” said Levent Ekmekçioğlu, company manager of Rem Engineering Construction and Trade Co Ltd.

\n\n

“Assistance was provided by Liebherr remotely in Jordan with no travel or accommodation costs and no time delays. The issue was solved immediately to our utmost satisfaction and we are very grateful for this extended assistance.”

\n\n

According to Liebherr, all that is needed for XpertAssist is an annual subscription, available for each individual machine or for entire fleets. As an option, the company offers a ready-to-use pre-installed tablet (LiTAB) enabling digital machine documentation and easy process data download, as well as remote operation monitoring, among its other benefits.

\n\n
