Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte Ltd is working together with Perennial Holdings Private Limited to roll out the Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) concept at Perennial Business City, an upcoming business park located in the Jurong Lake District, a precinct positioned as the second central business district of Singapore.

\n\n

The sustainable EaaS concept by Keppel Infrastructure – deemed the first-of-its-kind in the country – includes the installation and operation of super-efficient chiller systems and photovoltaic solar panels, offering zero carbon electricity long-term, as well as the setting up of smart electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, among others.

\n\n

With sustainable EaaS, Perennial Business City is set to become the first sustainable super-low-energy building that operates with renewable energy in the Jurong Lake District. Measuring over 1 mil sq ft in total net lettable area, the development – which is majority-owned and managed by Perennial – is expected to reduce its total building energy consumption by more than 40% when it commences operations progressively from 2022.

\n\n

“By harnessing Keppel Infrastructure’s suite of renewable energy, power, cooling and EV charging expertise, we are able to develop a unique energy delivery model that combines hardware, software and services aimed at maximising energy savings and users’ experience,” explained Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel Infrastructure. “With the confluence of climate action, digitalisation, and work-live-play as a new normal, we are well-placed to roll out more EaaS offerings in Singapore and the region.”

\n\n

She added that the EaaS concept is “an appealing value proposition as customers, such as building or asset owners, do not need to make upfront capital investment, and instead enter into a recurring subscription and service contract for energy usage and management.”

\n\n

Pua Seck Guan, CEO of Perennial said, “Perennial Business City marks not only our first foray into the business park space but also the setting of a new benchmark as the first sustainable super-low-energy business park in the Jurong Lake District.

\n\n

“With our investment of over S$100 million to redevelop the property into ‘A Visionary City Within a City’, coupled with its strategic location and extensive transportation connectivity, Perennial Business City will be the business park of choice for sustainability-minded tenants seeking scalability to support their future growth.”

\n\n

In their joint statement, both partners said to accelerate the adoption of green transport, Keppel Infrastructure will assist to install 20 smart EV charging stations at Perennial Business City. The company will also design and provide a super-efficient chiller system that will substantially improve Perennial Business City’s energy efficiency and put it on track to achieve the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) Green Mark Super Low Energy certification. This will translate to significant energy savings as cooling typically constitutes the biggest electrical load of a building, making up to 50% of energy usage.

\n\n

In addition, Keppel Infrastructure will supply solar-generated electricity to Perennial Business City to maximise the usage of scarce renewable resources in Singapore, and reduce the business park’s net carbon footprint. According to the statement, more than 1,800 solar panels will be installed on the roof of Perennial Business City, generating around 1,200 MWh per year. The solar panels will also reduce about 500 t of annual carbon emissions. This is in line with Keppel’s Vision 2030, which places sustainability firmly at the core of its strategy, and reinforces Perennial’s commitment to embed sustainability into its business operations.

\n\n

Designed to cater to tenants from high-value industries, including infocommunications technology, biomedical sciences, fast-moving consumer goods and financial institutions, Perennial Business City provides easy access to key transport nodes such as Jurong East Mass Rapid Transit Interchange Station, which serves the North-South and East-West Lines as well as the upcoming Jurong Region Line, and the future Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub. It is directly linked to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital via an elevated pedestrian walkway.

Malaysian company Bina Puri Holdings Bhd has won a NPR5.2 billion (about RM183 million) contract for the construction of Supreme Court building complex at Ramshahpath, Kathmandu. This new development is funded by the Government of Nepal.

\n\n

To build the project, Bina Puri has entered into a joint venture agreement with Nepalese companies Kalika Construction Pvt Ltd and Samanantar Nirman Sewa Pvt Ltd to form Bina Puri – Kalika - Samanantar JV.

\n\n

Awarded by the Supreme Court of Nepal, the project has a contract period of 36 months. It will consist of a seven-storey building including two basements, RCC framed structure building with complete finishing, landscaping and MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing along with firefighting) works.

\n\n

“We have been actively participating in the tender for projects both locally and overseas to further replenish our orderbook. With the latest award mentioned, the Group's latest project book order will increase to RM1.9 billion,” said Datuk Matthew Tee, Bina Puri’s group executive director.

\n\n

Kalika Construction Pvt Ltd is a well-known ‘A class’ construction company in Nepal, with over 40 years of experience. It was founded in 1976 and its parent company, Kalika Group, operates in five business sectors: hydropower, construction, software outsourcing, international trading and FM radio/media.

\n\n

Samanantar Nirman Sewa was founded in 1993 and is currently one of Nepal's growing and most reputable construction companies, having delivered a range of projects for government and other sectors.

\n\n

Bina Puri has more than 46 years of experience in civil and building construction both locally and globally. In Nepal, the Group had previously completed a five-star Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kathmandu in April 2000 valued at RM39 million. Among the shareholders of the hotel is the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

\n\n

Bina Puri's diverse business activities comprise investment holdings, civil and building engineering management, property development, highway concession, quarry operations, manufacturing of construction materials, utilities and hospitality management.

\n\n

The Group has been involved in various projects, such as roads and highways, bridges and interchanges, waterworks, land reclamation works, residential and commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, airports and government buildings. Bina Puri’s notable investment portfolios include the 33-km toll highway linking KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway, the Main Place Residence and Mall at USJ 21, and power plants in Indonesia.

The global manufacturer of building and construction materials Mapei Group recently announced the passing of its two top executives – president Giorgio Squinzi and operational marketing & communication director Adriana Spazzoli. Both died in Milan, Italy, on 2 October and 21 November 2019 respectively.

\n\n

Giorgio Squinzi: ‘Never stop pedalling’

\n\n

“Not only did Mr Squinzi devote his life to his family and company, his innovative vision and social work made an important contribution to business associations, the world of sport, and the wider community in his home city (Milan) and the rest of the world,” said Mapei in its statement.

\n\n

Born in 1943, with a degree in industrial chemistry, Mr Giorgio Squinzi served as the sole administrator of Mapei in 1984 following the death of his father, Rodolfo, who founded the company in 1937.

\n\n

Under the leadership of Mr Giorgio Squinzi, the company grew over the years to become one of the world’s leading players in chemical products for the building industry and currently operates in 56 countries through 89 subsidiaries. Mapei now employs over 10,500 staff and manufactures across five continents through 83 factories in 36 countries.

\n\n

In 1996, Mr Squinzi was awarded the ‘Ambrogino d’oro’ - one of the city’s highest awards - by the Mayor of Milan for his contribution to the city in the realms of both business and sport, and in 1998 he was knighted for his services to industry. In 2013, the former Italian president Giorgio Napolitano bestowed upon him the honour of being made a Grand Officer of the ‘Order of Merit of the Italian People’.

\n\n

Mr Squinzi held important posts in both Italian and international business associations. He was the president of the Italian Federation of Chemical Industries from 1997-2003 and then again from 2005-2011. He was also the leader of CEFIC, the European Council of Chemical Industries, which represents 29,000 companies in this sector, for a two-year period (2010-2012). In addition, Mr Squinzi was the president of the Italian Industrial Federation from May 2012-May 2016.

\n\n

Mr Squinzi’s motto ‘Never stop pedalling’ epitomised his approach to work and life. This expression comes from cycling, a passion for which he inherited from his father. Mr Squinzi sponsored the Mapei professional cycling team that won a total of 654 races from 1993-2002, reaching the very top of all the different international rankings. Mapei’s links to cycling go way back and still continue today through its partnership with the UCI (International Cycling Union): Mapei is the main sponsor of the Road World Championships.

\n\n

Mr Squinzi’s love of sport also extended to football. He took over Sassuolo Calcio in 2002, and in just a few years the club was promoted from Serie C2 to Serie A and is now firmly established among the leading clubs in Italy’s top division.

\n\n

Opera was another of Mr Squinzi’s great passions. He always attended the first night at La Scala in Milan and was a great opera fan. He was a member of the Opera House’s board of directors from 2016 and Mapei has been a permanent founding member since 2008.

\n\n

Adriana Spazzoli - the marketing pillar of Mapei

\n\n

Mapei announced on 22 November the de ath of Ms Sp azzoli. “Our dear Dottoressa Spazzoli passed away yesterday evening (21 November). Over the years, her extraordinary energy, her innate and contagious passion have significantly contributed to the development and growth of Mapei marketing and communications worldwide,” said the company.

\n\n

Born in Forlì, Italy i n 1948, Ms Spazzoli gra duated in Political Science, with a major in Economics at the University of Bologna. She went on to specialise in marketing and corporate communications thanks to her master degree and her experience in journalism.

\n\n

In 1985 she became marketing and communication director for Mapei, coordinating the image of the company and its communications tools, from technical and corporate documentation, to trade fairs, promotional work and sponsorships.

\n\n

In her role, Ms Spazzoli identified various channels that could be used as a communications vehicle to strengthen the company brand at a global level, particularly through: sport (cycling and football); music and opera; art, particularly in museums of excellence; and sustainability, such as energy savings or the removal of architectural barriers in favour of eco-sustainable products.

\n\n

Ms Spazzoli was always highly committed to her charitable work and sponsored various initiatives to promote social responsibility focused on providing support for the young and those less well off, including the Lega del Filo d’Oro, the Arché Foundation, Cascina solidale Le Vele, Casa Don Guanella in Lecco, San Patrignano and Exodus.

\n\n

She also offered her support to other charitable organisations involved in the construction of various types of structure for local people by providing Mapei solutions and know-how, such as the Centre of Excellence in Paediatric Surgery in Uganda, designed by Renzo Piano for Emergency.

\n\n

Since July 2016 she was the president of the Sodalitas Foundation, the reference organisation in Italy for the promotion of Corporate Sustainability and Social Responsibility.

\n\n

In January 2019 Ms Spazzoli became a member of Soroptimist International of Italy, an association that promotes women, women’s rights and the condition of women in general.

\n\n

Next generation to lead Mapei

\n\n

The children of Mr Squinzi and Ms Spazzoli - Veronica and Marco Squinzi - will now be leading the Mapei Group, following their appointment as chief executive officers in July 2019. They both have been working in the company for a number of years: Veronica as global development manager and Marco as director of R&D for Mapei Group.
