Gamuda wins Kaohsiung MRT project in Taiwan

Malaysia-based contractor Gamuda Berhad, together with Asia World Engineering & Construction Co (AWEC), has secured a design and build contract for Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Metropolitan Line (Yellow Line) from Kaohsiung City government.

Totalling approximately RM3.45 billion, the contract (package YC01) has been awarded to Gamuda and AWEC in a joint venture arrangement, with Gamuda holding the majority share at 88%. It is expected to be completed within nine years.

According to Gamuda, the work includes the construction of a 4.4 km railway track located within NiaoSong district – comprising 3.5 km underground twin-bored tunnels (with three underground stations) and 0.9 km of elevated tracks (with one elevated station) – as well as two crossovers and two cross passages.

This latest project is part of a substantial infrastructure initiative currently underway in Kaohsiung, with the primary goal of expanding and improving the city’s public transportation system within the NiaoSong district. It aims to create an efficient and modern MRT system to meet the growing demands of Kaohsiung’s urban population.

The package YC01 is the second railway project in Taiwan undertaken by Gamuda and AWEC joint venture. The first contract was for the TaoYuan City underground railway project (package CJ18) won last year. Based in Taiwan, AWEC involves in general civil construction specialising in geotechnical, hydraulic, architectural and civil engineering.
