Major construction projects in Asia make up a large number of winners at the Bentley 2017 Be Inspired Awards, reflecting the advancement of BIM technology across the region.

The annual awards event honours the extraordinary work of Bentley users advancing infrastructure design, construction and operations throughout the world.

From Southeast Asia, two construction projects have shined through. One of them is the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Project - Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is the winner of the award under the BIM Advancements in Rail and Transit category.

The KVMRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line is the second MRT line being developed for the Greater Kuala Lumpur-Klang Valley region of Malaysia, and is said to be the first metro project in Asia to adopt a BIM Level 2 strategy. MRT Corporation mandated a BIM methodology, including 3D photogrammetry for verification at critical milestones, to improve design collaboration, construction feasibility and accuracy of as-built information, and ensure sustainability of asset information throughout the project lifecycle.

The other project is the Automation and Integration of Substation Design Work for 230 kV Project in Kratié and Kampong Cham, Cambodia (above image, credit: Pestech International Berhad), which has won the award under the BIM Advancements in Utilities Transmission and Distribution category. Here, Diamond Power Limited awarded a US$100 million contract to Pestech International Berhad to design, supply, erect and commission a 230 kV substation and transmission system from the town of Kratié to the city of Kampong Cham. Pestech also secured a US$92.2 million EPC contract upgrade to build, operate and transmit, followed by a 25-year concession to operate and maintain the power transmission system. For the project, Pestech replaced the manual design process of past projects with Bentley Substation, which provided an integrated platform for electrical and power design.
